This is the one everyone stops to stare at.
Sturt's Desert Pea throws out masses of red flowers with a glossy black center—shiny enough to make your drill sergeant blush. The foliage stays low and silvery-grey, and when it’s in bloom, it’s taking 100% of the credit for garden visits.
Heat-loving, sun-hungry, and happiest when treated a little mean.
PSA — Read Before Adding to Cart
This plant has zero interest in pandering to your garden ego.
It’s picky about drainage, picky about irrigation, picky about humidity (can’t fault it there)—and if it doesn’t like something, its game over. It’ll just show itself to the door with a middle finger raised and a few colorful adjectives on the way out.
Not a beginner plant. Not a “stick it in the ground and see what happens” plant.
You’ve been warned.
Still up for the challenge? Read on, fearless warrior…
How Not to Kill It
- Drainage: Non-negotiable. If water sits, the plant quits. <—That needs to be on a T-Shirt
- Soil: Mineral, gritty, lean. No clay.
- Watering: A little counterintuitive—give it a few regular waterings early to establish. As it grows, switch to deeper, less frequent watering. Once settled, back off further—less than you think is usually right.
- Containers: Strongly recommended unless your soil is basically a gravel pit.
- Sun: Full, all-day sun.
- Airflow: More is better.
- Planting: Be gentle—don’t mess with the roots.
