(Seed Grown) Next Crop Spring 2027
Actinotus helianthi, aka the flannel flower, is an Australian native icon from the coastal heath, scrub, and open woodlands of New South Wales and southeastern Queensland. Its soft, silver-grey foliage and white, starry flower heads look super delicate—but the whole plant is covered in a woolly fuzz. Grow it in sun or part shade, in sandy, well-drained soil; soggy roots are definitely not its thing. It also grows beautifully in a pot—that’s how I grow mine—where you can give its shallow roots the conditions they like. Choose a sheltered spot away from strong winds, and avoid disturbing it once it’s settled in. This charming Aussie native has flowers that look ready to star in a wildflower bouquet—and feel like flannel.
