Babiana villosula is another sweet little winter grower from South Africa’s southwestern Cape. My plants have crisp white flowers—usually pale purple, 🤷.
I bought the seeds labeled Babiana villosa, so I’m blaming the taxonomists for placing so much responsibility on the humble U and L in these very similar names.
Plant it somewhere sunny with free-draining soil, or choose a pot with drainage holes to keep its roots from getting waterlogged. If your soil is heavy, a raised bed or gritty potting mix can make all the difference.
Water during active growth and flowering, then keep it dry through its summer rest. It’s a charming choice for a rock garden, sunny border, or patio pot—and a lovely little curiosity for anyone who enjoys growing something out of the ordinary.
