I found a spot in my central valley garden with deep clay soil, chalk intrusion, full sun, and limited water, where an earlier Ashby's banksia is thriving. This new plant, which arrived in great shape, has been repotted for now and will be planted out in the same area after the rains start. Hopefully, it will also thrive.
