(Seed Grown)Banksia serrata, commonly known as Old Man Banksia, is one of Australia's most iconic Banksias. With its gnarled grey bark, serrated leaves, and chunky greenish-yellow flower spikes, it has a wonderfully ancient, weathered appearance that looks like it has been standing guard in the bush for centuries. It’s easy to see why May Gibbs used Banksia seed pods as inspiration for the famously grumpy Banksia Men in Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.
A long-lived species from the east coast of Australia, Banksia serrata is a tough and adaptable plant that performs best in full sun with excellent drainage. The nectar-rich flowers are loved by birds and pollinators, while the distinctive seed cones provide year-round interest. Given the right conditions, this is a Banksia that will become a true garden feature rather than just another plant in the landscape.
